Your drive through rural India takes you to Kanha National Park. Its lush forests, meadows and ravines provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The largest wildlife sanctuary in Asia, Kanha was one of the first Project Tiger reserves in India and is home to tiger, leopard, wolf, jackal, sloth bear, macaque, wild dog, and a stunning spectrum of birds. On jungle safaris in open 4×4 vehicles, watch for shy creatures hiding in the grasses and listen to the vibrant sounds of nature – mating calls, alarms, even casual roars. Walks can also be arranged, as well as visiting the local villages.

After three nights at kanha, it is now off to Bandhavgarh which you will reach with a four hour drive. Each park you will visit has its own distinct characteristics and mix of wildlife to keep your sighting experiences varied. Bandhavgarh however, with its open grasslands and steep rocky outcrops has the highest tiger density in the Subcontinent and therefore offers a good chance of a coveted sighting. It is also a magical park for other reasons; during your three nights here, you can drive up a steep mountain in the centre of the park to visit the remote temple and deserted fort, then look down on the expanse of the park, perhaps even watching eagles catching the thermals below.

Take to the road again for your drive to northern-most Madhya Pradesh and tour the Eastern group of the famed Khajuraho Temples. These enchanting structures, now a World Heritage Site, are considered the high point of medieval Indian architecture and offer a fascinating insight into the country’s spirituality. Each shrine is dedicated to a Hindu deity or the Jaina pantheon, and all celebrate the sublime beauty of everyday life. You will be inspired by the complex spires, erotic imagery and intricately carved sculptures depicting ordinary villagers – farmers, musicians, women applying makeup, etc.

This morning flying to Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in the world dating back 3,500 years and one of the seven sacred cities of Hindu, home to the holy shrine of Lord Shiva. Watch the Hindu ritual of Aarti performed at sundown on the banks of the River Ganges. During the ceremony, small diva (candle-lit lamps decorated with flowers) are floated down the river as an offering to the Goddess Ganga, accompanied by a spellbinding chorus of hymn-chanting, drums and temple bells.
Next day, We begin early this morning with a sunrise boat tour on the Ganges, where you can watch the light gradually illuminate the many ghats and temples along the river as you pass. Later this morning we take a trip to nearby Sarnath, one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage destinations. This site is where Buddha spoke of the path to enlightenment, and it features a number of stupas and museums to explore. Alternatively, you may wish to spend your morning exploring the laneways and alleys behind the ghats, or picking up some examples of the excellent local silk industry.

After break fast we will move to Varanasi airport for Jaipur. Explore the “Pink City,” with its imperial history and tales of grand Mughals . Undoubtedly a city of royals, Jaipur draws thousands of travelers enchanted by its fabled past, timeless architecture and thriving traditional crafts, many from the 18th century. Attractions include the Amber Fort with its rugged walls, elegant palaces and gardens; the City Palace complex, the former residence of the royal family; the Palace of Winds with its intricate carved trelliswork; and Jantar Mantar, the largest observatory of its kind in the world.

Next drive south east for just under four hours to Ranthambore National Park, where you will be spending the following two nights. In recent years, the tiger population has been growing thanks in part to the positive effect which controlled and sustainable tourism has had on the key tiger parks. Not only that, you will see a myriad of other wildlife, from leopards, sloth bears, deer and diverse birdlife. In the centre of Ranthambore is an impressive ancient fort, and sometimes you see the tigers sunning themselves on ancient temples. Here we have included daily safaris for you to explore this beautiful area of the world and the hope of spotting a tiger or two!

Then, take the two-hour train to Bharatpur and to Agra, to experience the incredible Taj Mahal. On your first afternoon in Agra we have included some of the highlights of the city for you including the Agra Fort where Shah Jehan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, was imprisoned by his son and had a small window from which to gaze out over his creation and the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
